Featured Article Requirements
Copy needed: When an artist commits to a Featured Artist (FA) spot, it costs them nothing. But it does take time and effort - much, much more than if they just shoot a photo through an email.
What copy needs to be submitted: The focus of a FA spot is all about you. You need to include 1 to 2 paragraphs (10-12 sentences) that includes your biography as it relates to what you do regarding customizing dolls or making clothing, accessories, or other items for dolls. You need to include things such as when you began, any specialty sewing/knitting/etc. you do, any personal information you want to include, and what designs you focus on. You may write this information out yourself exactly as you want it to appear, or you may ask me to edit it, or you may include some points you want covered and ask me to write it for you. Either way you choose is at no cost to you.
Photos needed: When an artist takes the time to give their best pictures of their best dolls or dioramas, they are showcased in the best possible light. It's an effort on both sides, and Designer Dolls makes each FA page look as fantastic as they can with what they are given.
What photos need to be submitted: Ten to twelve high resolution pictures that are 1800 pixels wide x 2400 pixels high @ 300 dpi. You only have one page so all the pictures will not be used, and the ones used will be at the discretion of the DD Editor. Try not to use multiple pictures of one outfit unless you need to do this to submit the required number of pictures. You are trying to showcase as many of your fashions as DD will allow.
About showing your website url: If someone wants to advertise in Designer Dolls, it is very inexpensive to do so, compared to any other printed magazines. For a website listing, and a couple of lines, even a logo or other picture included, it's only $8. For just a classified 2-3 lines, including a website listing, it's only $3 (without a picture).
To help fans find you: From what I'm understanding, DD does not print your website url with your FA page; never has. To get your fans to you, you need to include your FB info - but do NOT put it in like this: https://www.facebook.com/dotfesteu - put it in like this and it should be included: facebook.com/dot.festeu. Hopefully, if you post some of your items on that FB page with a link to your CDS shop, people should be able to find you.
I don't want you to have to pay anything for your FA, and am not advocating for you to do so. If you feel you'd like to look into putting a personal ad in DD, however, I am giving you the info to do so.
Deadlines: There are none. DD Magazine is published monthly, so you submit and watch for your FA to come out - I won't be getting updates on this but will be watching for new articles and will let you know when I find you've been published
What DD may/may not use: I've submitted some Halloween pictures as well as the Star Trek article. This is my first attempt at having us published in DD, and the Editor advised me some of the photos from each were used, but she didn't use all the people in the articles I submitted. Here's the Editor's explanation why some weren't included:
Some photos are used, some are not. It is at our discretion. There were many, many fabulous photos that we did not get into the Halloween issue, just as an example. And it had nothing at all to do with the artist. It had to do with space, what was appropriate in our eyes on the pages, color choices, higher resolution and clearer photos, and so on.
Got questions: That's the info I have thus far, and I will update as I get more information. Also, you can always use the contact form on here to send me any questions you may have.
